Our Beginning

January 1, 2008

NOVA Parks (then Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority) meets with members of the League of Women Voters of the Fairfax Area and offers land for a suffrage memorial at the Occoquan Regional Park. League members agree to fundraise under the League’s 501(c)(3) foundation for a memorial wall in honor of the suffragists.

Our Name: Turning Point Suffragist Memorial (TPSM)

January 1, 2009

The scope and name of the project changes to Turning Point Suffragist Memorial (TPSM) to better identify its purpose and to recognize the importance of the suffrage movement with a large scale garden-style memorial.

February 1, 2009

The TPSM committee is expanded to include representation from many local, state, and national organizations.

Robert Beach Completes Architectural Design

January 1, 2010

The concept of the memorial is approved by the NOVA Parks. The Architectural design is completed by Robert Beach and Associates and approved by TPSM and the NOVA Parks. The Interpretation and Design Committee is established to complete the details of the design.

TPSMA Is Incorporated

January 1, 2011

Turning Point Suffragist Memorial Association (TPSMA) becomes incorporated in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and begins using the Northern Virginia Regional Park Foundation for funds management.

First Organizational Meeting

February 1, 2011

Organizational meeting of the TPSMA is held to establish the board of directors and elect officers.

Tax-Exempt Status for TPSM

March 1, 2011

TPSMA is designated a 501 (c) (3) organization by the IRS and begins its own funds management.

TPSM Development Agreement

April 1, 2011

A memorandum of understanding is signed between TPSMA and the NOVA Parks for the development of the memorial in Occoquan Regional Park, and the operation and maintenance by the NOVA Parks in perpetuity.

Application for solicitation in Virginia is approved.

New Park Master Plan-Agreement

February 1, 2012

The memorandum of understanding between the TPSMA and the NOVA Parks is amended due to a new park master plan.

National Recognition of TPSM

January 1, 2013

TPSM achieves national attention when TPSMA joins a coalition of national groups to organize and participate in the centennial celebration of the first suffrage parade in Washington, D.C.
